Kinloch Anderson

Highlandwear Retail Store, St Andrews

An honour to work with such an iconic Scottish brand.

After seeing Izon Projects’ site signage and branding on projects for the University of St Andrews and VisitScotland, Kinloch Anderson approached us to support its next venture. Established in 1868, Kinloch Anderson is one of Scotland’s oldest kiltmakers, with a reputation built on generations of craftsmanship, quality and tradition. It was a genuine honour to work with such an iconic Scottish brand.

The company had identified St Andrews as the ideal location for a new retail store but needed support to find the right premises. Izon worked closely with Kinloch Anderson throughout the search, advising on the lease or purchase of potential properties and ensuring each site’s condition aligned with the agreed terms.

Our design team visited Kinloch Anderson’s Leith headquarters to gain a detailed understanding of the business, including its sales operation and logistical requirements. Following a survey of the selected premises, we developed a concept that responded directly to the brief: a fresh, contemporary retail space that retained the history, craftsmanship and luxury of the Scottish brand. Flexibility was central to the interior design, with an adaptable retail system that could evolve with changing displays while creating opportunities to share Kinloch Anderson’s distinctive story throughout the store. The finished environment was designed to feel unmistakably authentic—a refined home for a traditional Scottish kiltmaker, rather than a typical high-street souvenir shop.

Our architect managed the planning application, listed-building and advertising consents, alongside the full design and installation of the mechanical and electrical services. Izon also designed and built all bespoke joinery to meet the client’s exacting specification.

The interior combines lightly stained oak timber with stainless-brass fittings and Kinloch Anderson’s signature black-and-gold palette. High-level graphics and digital screens tell the story of the brand throughout the space, leading to the focal-point Clan Wall, where visitors can discover their surname and its place of origin on a map of Scotland. Two consultation fitting rooms, supported by a private consultation suite at the rear of the shop, give the Kinloch Anderson team space to work closely with customers and ensure the perfect look and fit before a purchase or hire. A large digital screen in the window and the Royal Warrant above the shopfront create a strong street presence and invite customers inside.

This project reflects Izon Projects’ end-to-end design-and-build ethos, from the first client conversations through to final handover.
